Quins v Hollybush

The quins had to draw on all the resources available to put out a side against a Hollybush side that only a few weeks ago had put them to the sword. However if there is one thing that can be said about the quins it's that no matter what happens they will play and play the full 80 minutes and apparently enjoy every minute. With the 1st XV having to draw on their players because of injuries, even having to call on one old head already in his green kit because of an injury in the warm up to one of theirs!. New bodies were dragged in without anyone knowing how they would play but what the hell 15 boys at least were going to have a game and not worry about anything else.

The game was tough and would you believe it hard but hey we were still competing and enjoying it. With players in positions they have never played before the old heads still managed to keep the score down and Captain Bod was marshalling his troops well but going into the final minute we were down by a single penalty. Having put the opposition under lots of pressure time was running out and when a mistimed pass went out of hand and was hacked out of their half for the last  time by an Hollybush player the game looked lost. A knock on by an Ynysddu hand gave the scrum to Hollybush inside the Ynysddu 22. Rallying cries from the packed Bryn field supporters, who had turned up because they thought the Penllwyn under 10s were playing home, inspired the pack to one last effort. They pushed the Hollybush pack yards before Sean the Sec picked the ball up between the 22 and 10 yard line to make his break of the season, spinning around their No.9 he saw the huge gap between the no.10 and centre that was bigger than a barn door, just enough for him to squeeze through if he took a deep breath, speeding through at the speed of Bryn Pipe he took them by surprise and with a well timed pass put Benny Helmore on the straight run to the try line. Having scored in the previous game he felt it only fair not to go full out and allowed the covering tacklers to get to him. Dad John was on hand to kick him up the butt, give him a rollicking about cutting inside before the rest of the quins pack drove over leaving the Helmores on their butts and clean ball for Sean. The dive pass , a recording of 6.5 on the richter scale hit the bryn, out to Captain Marvel who let his outside men finish the job. Wag scores the winning try in the corner, the crowd invade the pitch whilst Bod adds the other points. The referee still have time on his hands but the clock was ticking, tick, tock and then the whistle.  A fine victory which was only spoilt by the sight of Jaffas Y fronts in the lounge later. A first game at the Bryn Field, which could become our new Southfork, was an landside victory 7pts to 3pts. The quins have now avenged their only defeat of the year and could now go until the end of the season without a defeat. That would be some achievement and a credit to all the players.

It is hoped that on 28th March that the club will take 1 team but hopefully both teams over the bridge but it is dependant on numbers available so please let the management known if you are available or not as soon as possible for arrangements to be made.#

Ynysddu RFC v Llanhilleth RFC 7 Mar 09

With eight first team players unavailable for selection Ynysddu knew it was going to be a big ask to take the points off a much improved and in form Llanhilleth side. But as it turned out they could have won the game had they taken the chances that came their way. What hurt most was when the visitors scored the only try of the match, everyone but the referee saw the knock on under the Dee's posts.

Lady luck was definitely not with the home side as they missed two kick-able penalties that any other day would have been a guaranteed 6 points. With the rain pouring down handling was being made more difficult by the driving wind, but having faced the elements in the first half Ynysddu were quietly confident they could pull back the 7 points deficit. But as it turned out the visitors defence proved too strong, even when scoring opportunities did arise for the Dee's their hearts ruled their heads, and long missed passes were thrown out where as had the ball gone through the hands a try was certain. The match ended with a 10 points to nil win for Llanhilleth.

In the pack, second row forward Jason Rendall had an excellent game, winning superb line-out ball and cover tackling like a back back-row. Martin Gleadall marked his return from injury with a power-full performance that is going to make selection for the centre position very interesting. With another break next week for the six nations, coach Andrew Royale will be hoping it will buy him time to get a full squad fit for the next league match.
