RTB Athletic. 8pts vs Ynysddu 5pts.
19th Sep 09 - RTB Athletic. 8 vs 5 Ynysddu
Report by Phil Swan

RTB Athletic Secure First Win.

The RTB Athletic team league match against Ynysddu was a close run thing as the score suggests. For much of the game RTB’s pack were on top and pressure by the pack led to an early penalty kicked by outside half for the day Adam Morgan. This score did not change until the final minute of the first half when Ynysddu scored an opportunist try which was well worked by the visitors back division who played well throughout and shaded the running game.

Overall, though it was RTB Athletic who came out on top when Adam Morgan scored the winning try in the final quarter. There were many excellent performances in RTB team, no one better than Andrew Penny who continues to show how he has been missed during the years since he left the club. Chris Green not only worked hard, but drove the pack on with his physical and verbal encouragement. It was an all round fine team effort.

RTB (Ebbw Vale) 24pts vs Ynysddu 24pts
19th Sep 09 - RTB Ebbw Vale 24 vs 24 Ynysddu
Report by Phil Swan

RTB Like Jeckel And Hyde.

RTB 1st xv showed their Jeckel and Hyde side in their home league against Ynysddu in terms of when they were good they were good and when they were bad they were bad.

The sides kicked off and some power play from RTB’s Lee Mcpherson and Nathan Manning kept Ynysddu on the back foot for the first ten minutes, from that moment Ynysddu took control of the game and scored an unconverted try at the corner. RTB 0 – 5 Ynysddu.

Ynysddu were now bossing the game and running at will. Against the run of play RTB’s Jonathan pleece kicked through and gathered to out pace the defence to score an unconverted try. RTB 5 – 5 Ynysddu.

Back came Ynysddu and within minutes had retaken the lead through a long range penalty. RTB 5 – 8 Ynysddu.

At this point RTB had a lean spell with the ball Lee Swan and Gareth Hunter going inches short from set piece lineout ball only to be rebuffed by a very good Ynysddu defence.

Ynysddu were back now putting RTB under pressure and on the stroke of halftime increased their lead when they kicked a penalty. RTB 5 – 11 Ynysddu.

Ynysddu started the second half as they finished the first and scored an unconverted try wide out. RTB 5 – 16 Ynysddu.

Frustration was now creeping into RTB’s play and was showing in their basic play, but then RTB flanker Nathan Jones latched on to a loose ball and quickly fed supporting Lee Swan, who bulldozed his way over for an unconverted try to grab an RTB lifeline on the game. RTB 10 – 16 Ynysddu.

Ynysddu again showed their fight and scored a third unconverted try of their own putting the onus back on their hosts. RTB 10 – 21 Ynysddu.

This score seemed to spur RTB and the game pendulum swung the other way, It was now all RTB. Off one attack a three to one RTB move to the Ynysddu line was adjudged to have been deliberately charged down by the defender and a penalty try was awarded and converted by Ryan Shepherd. RTB 17 – 21 Ynysddu.

The game was now turning into a nail biting thriller; a kick out of defence by Ynysddu was collected by Jonathan Pleece in his own Twenty-Two who then fed centre Ryan Shepherd who sprinted away, beating three would be tacklers to score the try of the day which he also converted. RTB 24 – 21 Ynysddu.

Drama again! With a minute remaining of injury time, RTB conceded a penalty which Ynysddu gratefully took to equalise and the referee to blow for full time. RTB 24 – 24 Ynysddu.

On reflection, RTB came back from the dead and could have won their first game of the season, but a fair result being a bonus try point draw for RTB.
